Super foods are those that supposedly contain large amounts of a certain element, vitamin, enzyme, antioxidant or protein that occur naturally. People looking to lose weight like myself often misconstrue super foods as something that you can take in large quantities and avoid having to eat anything else. This way we can cut out all the obvious fatty foods and all the strict diets that have to be adhered to exactly as written, keeping things simple. However, having too much of something often has side effects. I found this out the hard way when I recently tried out the latest super food to hit the shelves and had an equally extra large dose of acai berry side effects.

For those who don`t know, berries like blueberries often contain huge amounts of antioxidants, vitamin C, anthocyanins and fibre, all of which are good for you. According to research I`ve done acai berries are no different but perhaps don`t contain the same amounts of antioxidants that blueberries do. However, since there`s no real correlation between antioxidants and weight loss, this doesn`t really matter. While most nutritionists will tell you not to binge or eat too much of a certain food, I have to say that I did go a little bit overboard with the acai berries hence some rather adverse acai berry side effects. While I did manage to get some actual acai berries from a Brazilian supermarket down the corner I also got myself some other variations to help act as a supplement to go with my daily diet. I don`t think that I went too crazy on the acai berries, after all, they`re not as sweet as blueberries and have a rather bitter aftertaste but I did eat a lot more than my usual diet.

One of the main acai berry side effects to hit me first is exactly what you`d expect if you take too much fibre; much in the same way if you`d chug down a whole bottle of prune juice. While acai berry doesn`t contain the same levels of natural laxative that prunes do, I did get some diarrhoea for a while, at least until I cut down a little on my intake. After a while I began to see some of the benefits which included a better feeling of well being and some weight loss. For a while I tried taking an acai berry blend but started getting a bit hyper. Seeing as how this wasn`t listed in any of the known acai berry side effects, I took a closer look at the blend ingredients and found that I`d been overdosing a little on caffeine thanks to the guarana the makers were cutting into the mix. As before this meant a reduction in intake for an eventual decrease in the hyper feeling.

Aside from the diarrhoea I didn`t find any other acai berry side effects although my friend who was taking it along with me said he had a bit more hay fever than usual. I hate to admit it but even the diarrhoea was probably avoidable if I had just practiced a little moderation, something I`d advise anyone else wanting to try out acai berry products.
